AGEMERA organises public event in Freiberg, Germany
Our team at TU Bergakademie Freiberg hosted a public discussion with almost 100 participants on the future of critical raw materials in the region
Here's the thing about our project: AGEMERA is not only dedicated to advancing research and promoting technological
innovations - it also places a strong emphasis on knowledge dissemination and facilitating an open dialogue on the
exploration and extraction of critical raw materials in target regions. The project develops educational materials,
conducts surveys and interviews and organises public events. The latter are aimed at bringing together citizens,
businesses, associations, regulatory authorities and political decision-makers who are either affected by or involved in
the exploration and extraction of critical raw materials.
On 5 March 2025, AGEMERA hosted such an event: a public discussion in Freiberg, a town that is part of the UNESCO World
Heritage Site "Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region" which attracted almost 100 participants.
Our colleague Georg Meissner conducted a
presentation, where he provided context on the political background of the Paris Agreement, the Green Deal and the
Critical Raw Materials Act. He discussed the increasing demand for raw materials necessary for the digital and green
transition, explained what critical raw materials are, why they are important and how our project fits into this
framework. Following that, mining companies currently developing their projects in the Erzgebirge Region presented the
progress on their projects, and the mining authority shared insights from past public events and dialogues with
stakeholders. After these presentations, attendees had the opportunity to voice their opinions, ask questions and engage
directly with mining companies, the mining authority and fellow participants. This exchange evolved into a dynamic
discussion. Towards the end of the event, guests were invited to continue their conversations in a relaxed setting over
complimentary snacks and drinks.
The event served as a neutral platform for open discourse, allowing different attendees to share their
perspectives, address concerns and contribute to a constructive dialogue on how the future of critical raw materials in
the region could look like under the consideration of stakeholder needs. The event was well received, with
attendees highlighting their appreciation for the combination of presentations, discussions and opportunity for informal
conversations over drinks and snacks. Many also expressed a strong interest in similar future events, recognising them
as valuable platforms for fostering mutual understanding.
